Do you have Revolutionary War Ancestors who fought or may have fought at the Battle of the Cowpens?

cowpens

There is a newly published book that looks at the battle from all sides – American, British, officer, enlisted, battle tactics, weather, terrain, etc.

A Devil of a Whipping – The Battle of Cowpens by Lawrence E. Babits is a military history book on the battle, but it is also a wonderful genealogical resource. His research included American and British official records, officers reports, pension records, personal histories, and maps drawn by participants. Some of these maps are reproduced in the book.

A Devil of a Whipping

What I found most valuable were the numerous names found within the volume. Mr. Babits refers by name to the commanders, from major units down to small groups of soldiers, and then references the various enlisted men who provided eyewitness accounts in their pension applications.

If you had ancestors that served in Virginia (Continental Army or state militia units), Maryland, North or South Carolina or Georgia militias or in Lt. Col. Banastre Tarleton’s British unit during the American Revolution you may find this volume provides you valuable information either on your ancestor, his unit, or his commanders.

Take the time to review this volume and see if it can provide you with additional information on your ancestor. At the very least, you will come away with a greater appreciation of the type of service our ancestors experienced while serving in the Revolutionary War.

(A Devil of a Whipping – The Battle of Cowpens by Lawrence E. Babits is available for checkout from any of the 5 Plano libraries.)

Field & Staff 16th Texas Cavalry

Earlier this year I posted about finding this unit on http://www.fold3.com.

The majority of 16th Texas Cavalry was comprised of men and boys from the Collin & Denton County, Texas area.

We now have a copy of the unit roster transcribed, printed and available for reference in the Genealogy Center Vertical File.

Come in, glance over the roster, find your soldier’s name and let us assist you in finding more information on his service, his family and hopefully his life after the Civil War.

Good Hunting!

The Genealogy Center has received a shipment of new books. The majority relate to the country of Mexico and the state of West Virginia.

To our Mexico collection we have added seventeen (17) new volumes for the areas of Coahuila, Nuevo Leon, and Tamaulapis. These volumes include information on Births, Baptisms, Marriages, Deaths and Cemeteries.

To our West Virginia collection we have added twenty seven (27) new volumes for four counties – Calhoun, Doddridge, Harrison and Richie. Volumes include Census records from 1850 to 1920, Marriages and Deaths.

In both cases these volumes make wonderful additions to their respective regions.

Even if your family lines do not come through either Mexico or West Virginia, come to the Genealogy Center and see if our collection can assist you in your search. We have volumes from all 50 states and the District of Columbia, as well as over 20 countries and/or regions outside the United States.

How many Texas flags did you see flying last Sunday? (I noticed only one in our neighborhood.)

Texas flag

The date was March 2d – Texas Independence Day; the day the Texas Constitutional Convention signed the Texas Declaration of Independence.

FileTexas-Declaration-of-Independence

March 1836 saw several historic events here in Texas.

Did you have an ancestor present when the Texas Constitutional Convention met on 1 March 1836? How about 2 March when the Declaration was signed? Did one fall at the Alamo on 6 March 1836? or at Goliad between 20 and 27 March 1836?

A new book has been added here in the Genealogy Center – Encyclopedia of the Alamo and the Texas Revolution. It compliments the books and material within our collection to assist you in identifying your relatives that took part – willingly (soldiers and statesmen) or not (victims of marching/looting/fighting armies) in this revolution.

You will find various volumes that identify soldiers who volunteered and fought at Anahuac, The Alamo, Goliad

List of Texians at Goliad

and San Jacinto, as well as other less known locations.

Whether your family arrived before the revolution, during or after, let us assist you in your research.  Our collection is constantly growing. If you have not yet visited the Genealogy Center, come in and take a tour, or better yet, spend the day. If you have visited in the past march back in and see what has been added.

Good Hunting!
